Police say a gunman opened fire outside the main gate of Nellis Air Force Base in Las Vegas, a facility linked to the wider Area 51 complex.
The suspect, described as acting erratically, pointed his weapon at security officers before being shot in the leg and taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The base temporarily closed its main gate and rerouted traffic but said there is no threat to the public.
An investigation is ongoing, the Daily Mail has reported.
While Nellis oversees training operations, Area 51 remains a separate, remote site used for classified testing.
