Luigi Mangione’s lawyers claim Trump violated right to fair trial

Lawyers for Luigi Mangione, accused of murdering UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, claim that former President Donald Trump and other officials have violated Mangione’s right to a fair trial.

In court filings, his attorneys cited Trump’s Fox News interview, where he described Mangione as a “pure assassin,” and social media posts from DOJ employees implying his guilt.

They also challenged statements linking Mangione to “left-wing extremist” groups, arguing these assertions are false and politically motivated.

U.S. District Judge Margaret Garnett warned DOJ officials against making comments that could interfere with the trial, noting that future violations may lead to sanctions, the BBC has reported.

Mangione, 27, has pleaded not guilty to murder and related federal charges, including firearms offenses, and his lawyers have requested removal of the death penalty; his next hearing is scheduled for December 5.
