Top congressional leaders head to the White House ahead of shutdown deadline

President Trump will meet Monday with the top four congressional leaders to discuss funding the government ahead of a Sept. 30 deadline to avoid a shutdown.

House Republicans passed a short-term continuing resolution to fund the government through Nov. 21, but it failed in the Senate due to Democratic opposition, where 60 votes are needed to pass.

Democrats want to make permanent certain ACA tax cuts and reverse GOP health care program cuts, while Republicans want to fund the government first and negotiate later.

Without action, government funding will expire at midnight on Oct. 1, potentially delaying nonessential services and leaving hundreds of thousands of federal workers unpaid, NPR has reported.

The White House has instructed agencies to prepare for permanent layoffs, a move Democrats called “mafia-style blackmail” aimed at pressuring lawmakers.
