The Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in southern Ukraine, Europe’s largest, has been running on emergency diesel generators for nine days after its last external power line was cut during fighting on Sept. 23.
Russian-installed management says the generators are sufficient for now, while Ukraine blames Russian shelling for preventing power restoration.
All six reactors are shut down, and radiation levels remain normal, but the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) warns that continued loss of external power poses a severe risk to reactor and spent fuel cooling, Reuters has reported.
The plant has been under Russian control since 2022, and the situation has raised international concerns about a potential nuclear accident.
