California Gov. Gavin Newsom warned he would strip billions in state funding from any California university that signs onto President Trump’s new “Compact for Academic Excellence in Higher Education,” which ties federal dollars to compliance with administration rules on admissions, hiring, free speech, teaching, and use of endowments.
Newsom vowed to cut off Cal Grants and other aid if schools “surrender academic freedom.”
The compact was sent to nine universities, including the University of Southern California, which received $28.4 million in Cal Grant funds last year, KCRA 3 has reported.
White House officials criticized Newsom, saying he is opposing reforms meant to curb tuition hikes and protect free speech.
