Manchester synagogue attacker named as British citizen of Syrian descent

A 35-year-old British citizen of Syrian descent, Jihad Al-Shamie, was identified as the attacker who killed two people and injured four others in a car and knife assault outside Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue in Manchester on Yom Kippur.

Al-Shamie drove into worshippers with a black Kia Picanto before stabbing a security guard, and was shot dead by police within minutes.

Three others have been arrested in connection with the attack, The Telegraph has reported.

The Prime Minister has increased security at synagogues nationwide, while Israeli officials condemned rising antisemitism in Britain.
