A Thai court sentenced former marine Ekkalak Paenoi to life imprisonment for the January killing of former Cambodian opposition lawmaker Lim Kimya in Bangkok, after initially handing down the death penalty.
Lim, 74, was shot hours after arriving from Cambodia with his wife and brother.
Ekkalak, 41, confessed to the crime, prompting the sentence reduction, and was also ordered to pay 1.79 million baht ($55,162) in compensation to the victim’s family.
A second Thai defendant accused of helping Ekkalak flee to Cambodia was cleared due to insufficient evidence, Reuters has reported.
Two Cambodian nationals remain at large in connection with the killing, and Lim’s family urged authorities to continue the investigation and bring them to justice.
