Federal agents shot a woman Saturday morning in Chicago’s Brighton Park neighborhood after being boxed in by multiple vehicles, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
Agents said they opened fire when one driver, later identified as 40-year-old Marimar Martinez, allegedly pointed a semi-automatic weapon at them.
Martinez, who was wounded and later released from the hospital, faces federal charges for assaulting law enforcement officers, along with another suspect, 21-year-old Anthony Ian Santos Ruiz.
DHS said several officers were injured, vehicles were damaged, and special operations teams were deployed to restore order, CBS News has reported.
The shooting sparked large protests marked by clashes between agents and demonstrators, while Chicago police said they only assisted with safety and traffic control as federal authorities led the investigation.
