Federal immigration authorities announced Monday that ICE and CBP agents have arrested dozens of violent offenders in Chicago as part of “Operation Midway Blitz,” a DHS-led crackdown on criminal noncitizens across Illinois.
The arrests, officials said, targeted gang members, child abusers, and drug traffickers amid ongoing unrest and protests in the city.
Among those taken into custody were alleged Tren de Aragua gang member Wilmer Alexander Gonzalez Garaban and repeat offender Ricardo Gervasio-Gervasio, along with others convicted of larceny, assault, and drug crimes.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem praised agents for continuing operations despite violent resistance and what she called “domestic terrorist” attacks on federal vehicles, Fox News has reported.
The operation, launched in early September, has resulted in over 1,000 arrests statewide, though recent incidents involving deadly use of force by agents have sparked renewed protests and scrutiny of DHS tactics.
