Australian prosecutors have appealed Erin Patterson’s life sentence, arguing that her 33-year non-parole period for killing three relatives and attempting to kill a fourth with death cap mushrooms is “manifestly inadequate.”
Patterson was convicted of serving the poisoned meal during a 2023 lunch at her home, though her motive remains unknown.
Prosecutors had sought no possibility of parole, while her defense requested eligibility after 30 years.
Justice Christopher Beale set parole eligibility at 33 years, citing the devastating impact on the victims’ families and Patterson’s own children, CBS News has reported.
Both the prosecution’s appeal for a harsher term and Patterson’s planned appeal of her conviction will be heard by the Victorian Court of Appeal.
