New Jersey declares state of emergency as nor’easter approaches

A nor’easter swept up the U.S. East Coast on Sunday, bringing heavy rain, strong winds, and coastal flooding from the Carolinas to New England, while western Alaska faced hurricane-force winds and catastrophic flooding from Typhoon Halong’s remnants.

In Alaska, entire homes were swept off foundations in the isolated Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta villages of Kipnuk and Kwigillingok, where up to 20 people were initially reported missing, and more than 170 sought shelter.

Coastal flooding and road closures affected communities from North Carolina’s Outer Banks to South Carolina, with homes damaged and motorists rescued from rising waters.

New Jersey and parts of New York declared states of emergency, with coastal flood warnings, high winds, and heavy rain prompting sandbagging efforts, flight disruptions, and travel advisories, ABC News has reported.

Officials emphasized safety, urging residents to stay home while emergency crews and utilities worked to respond to damage and restore services.
