Jonathan Rinderknecht, 29, was arrested in Florida and charged with destruction of property by means of fire for allegedly sparking the deadly Palisades Fire in Southern California on New Year’s Day.
Federal authorities said Rinderknecht, an Uber driver in Los Angeles that night, displayed agitation after dropping off a passenger near Pacific Palisades and allegedly started the fire at the Skull Rock trailhead.
The blaze ultimately killed 12 people and displaced many others after underground embers reignited in strong winds.
Prosecutors highlighted Rinderknecht’s social media activity, which included anti-Trump posts, pro-Biden links, and frequent commentary on climate change, Fox News has reported.
After starting the fire, he reportedly called 911 and asked ChatGPT if one could be at fault for a fire caused by cigarettes, to which the AI confirmed.
