Madagascar’s president has left the country after Gen Z protests, officials say

Madagascar’s President Andry Rajoelina has fled the country after weeks of protests led by young demonstrators, marking the second recent government toppled amid global Gen Z unrest.

Opposition leader Siteny Randrianasoloniaiko confirmed that Rajoelina left on Sunday after army units defected to join the protesters, though his current location remains undisclosed.

In a Facebook address, Rajoelina said he moved to a safe location to protect his life but refused to formally resign, insisting he would not “allow Madagascar to be destroyed.”

Reports indicate he departed on a French military aircraft, with French media suggesting a deal with President Emmanuel Macron, CNN has reported.

The president’s office has not responded to requests for comment.
