North Carolina GOP announce plans to vote on new House map amid nationwide redistricting battle

North Carolina Republican leaders announced plans to vote next week on redrawing the state’s U.S. House districts, responding to President Trump’s call to secure more GOP seats and counter Democratic efforts.

The state’s current map, enacted in 2023, gave Republicans 10 of 14 seats in 2024, up from a 7-7 split under the 2022 map.

Only the 1st District, held by Democrat Don Davis, remains a true swing district, and Republicans aim to adjust its boundaries to potentially capture an 11th seat, though changes could affect GOP incumbents elsewhere.

House Speaker Destin Hall framed the effort as defending Trump’s electoral mandate, noting the former president has won North Carolina in all his presidential bids, Politico has reported.

Democrats, including state House leader Robert Reives, criticized the move as an attempt to “steal a congressional district” and avoid accountability at the ballot box.
