Authorities in Indonesia have raised the alert to the highest level after Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki erupted, sending ash about 10 km (6.2 miles) into the sky.
No casualties or damage were immediately reported, but residents and tourists on Flores Island have been warned to stay clear and prepare for potential evacuation.
The volcano erupted twice early Wednesday, with authorities advising people to remain at least 6–7 km (3.7–4.3 miles) away and warning of possible volcanic mudflows if heavy rain occurs.
The eruption has disrupted operations at Fransiskus Xaverius Seda Airport in Maumere, which will remain closed until Thursday, Al-Jazeera has reported.
Indonesia, home to over 120 active volcanoes along the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” previously saw deadly eruptions at Lewotobi, including one in November 2024 that killed 10 people and damaged thousands of homes.
