Trump says he and Putin will meet in Budapest to discuss end to Russia-Ukraine war

President Donald Trump announced that he and Russian President Vladimir Putin plan to meet in Budapest to discuss ending the Russia-Ukraine war, following what he described as a “lengthy and frank” two-and-a-half-hour phone call with Putin.

Trump did not specify a date for the summit but said high-level U.S. and Russian advisers, led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, will meet next week to prepare.

The Kremlin confirmed the call, saying both sides emphasized a desire for a political and diplomatic solution to the conflict.

Trump said “great progress was made” and credited First Lady Melania Trump’s humanitarian efforts to reunite Ukrainian children with their families for helping improve dialogue with Moscow, CBS News has reported.

The announcement came as Congress pushes forward with new bipartisan sanctions on Russia, signaling continued pressure on the Kremlin despite Trump’s diplomatic outreach.
