In a shift, White House says no plan for Trump-Putin summit

The White House has paused plans for a second summit between President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, officials said.

The move reflects Washington’s recognition that the gap between Russia and Ukraine remains too wide for a peace deal.

A White House official confirmed there are “no plans” for Trump and Putin to meet in the near future.

Trump told reporters he has not made a final decision on the meeting, saying he doesn’t want to have a “wasted meeting.”

He had previously announced plans to meet Putin in Budapest within two weeks.

That plan shifted after Trump’s tense meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, where he urged both sides to end the war, Axios has reported.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s expected meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov also fell through after an unproductive phone call.

The Kremlin dismissed reports of a postponed summit, saying no date had ever been set.

Zelensky said Ukraine accepted Trump’s ceasefire proposal along current front lines, but Russia rejected it.

He also argued that providing Ukraine with long-range weapons like Tomahawk missiles could push Putin toward serious negotiations.
