Woman arrested over theft of gold worth $1.7 million from Paris Natural History Museum

A 24-year-old Chinese woman was arrested and charged over the theft of gold from Paris’s Natural History Museum, part of a recent wave of high-profile French museum break-ins.

The September 16 heist involved nearly six kilograms of native gold, including nuggets from Bolivia, Russia, California, and Australia, valued at around €1.5 million ($1.7 million), though their historical and scientific worth is considered priceless.

Investigators said the thief cut museum doors with a grinder, breached the display case with a blowtorch, and was caught trying to dispose of melted gold in Barcelona, CBS News has reported.

The arrest comes amid other audacious French museum thefts, including a $102 million jewelry heist at the Louvre, raising concerns over security at the country’s cultural institutions.
