Police probe new video showing Louvre jewel thieves escaping

Investigators in Paris have recovered DNA traces from a helmet and gloves linked to the gang behind the Louvre jewel heist, and new video shows the thieves escaping the museum, prosecutors confirmed.

The daylight robbery on Sunday lasted just four minutes, during which the group used power tools to break display cases, threatened guards, and fled on scooters, dropping Empress Eugénie’s crown along the way.

They stole eight pieces of jewelry valued at an estimated 88 million euros ($102.6 million), and around 100 investigators are racing to recover them before the jewels can be melted down.

Footage filmed by the public shows two men descending a basket lift at the museum and escaping on scooters, while the Louvre director admitted cameras failed to detect the thieves in time, NBC News has reported.

The museum has reopened, though the Apollon Gallery remains closed, and the director’s offered resignation was refused by the Culture Minister.
