NBA gambling arrests stun league, expose mafia links

A major betting scandal has rocked American basketball, with 34 arrests across 11 states, including NBA players and a coach, in connection with illegal gambling and organized crime.

Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier is accused of using insider information—such as knowing when players would sit out or leave games early—to place targeted bets on underperformance in points, assists, and rebounds.

Portland Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups and others face charges related to a rigged high-stakes poker ring involving fake shuffling machines and X-ray tables, which defrauded victims of at least $7 million.

Prosecutors say the schemes were backed by New York’s “Five Families” mafia, who profited, enforced payments, and laundered money through cryptocurrency and other channels, Al-Jazeera has reported.

The indictments highlight connections between NBA figures and organized crime, adding to recent sports betting scandals since legalized betting expanded in 2018.
