Left-leaning independent Catherine Connolly wins Irish presidential election

Left-wing independent Catherine Connolly won Ireland’s presidential election in a landslide, receiving 63% of first-preference votes against center-right rival Heather Humphreys.

Backed by Sinn Féin, Labour, and the Social Democrats, Connolly emphasized diversity, peace, and Ireland’s policy of neutrality, while critics warned her stances on Gaza and EU militarization could strain alliances.

She will succeed Michael D. Higgins as Ireland’s 10th president, a largely ceremonial role with important constitutional and international duties, NBC News has reported.

Voter turnout was 46%, and spoiled ballots surged tenfold compared to 2018, signaling public dissatisfaction with the political system.
