Hochul says she thought ‘tax the rich’ chant was ‘let’s go Bills’

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said Monday she initially misheard a “tax the rich” chant at a Sunday rally for mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani, thinking the crowd was shouting “Let’s go Bills” in support of the NFL team.

She acknowledged later that the crowd was expressing passion for taxing the wealthy, emphasizing her role as Democratic Party leader to unify behind Mamdani.

Hochul formally endorsed Mamdani in September, after he upset former Gov. Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic primary.

The rally featured audible chants of “tax the rich” as Hochul spoke, The Hill has reported.

Mamdani, a young democratic socialist, is now facing Cuomo, who is running as an independent, in the general election.
