More than 1,000 objects were stolen from the Oakland Museum of California after thieves broke into an off-site storage facility on October 15, including Native American baskets, jewelry, and laptops.
The museum confirmed the theft two weeks later, calling it a “brazen act” that deprives the public of the state’s cultural heritage.
The Oakland Police Department is working with the FBI’s Art Crime Team to recover the stolen items, Newsweek has reported.
The heist follows a high-profile theft of $102 million in jewels from the Louvre in Paris, highlighting global concerns about museum security.
