Israel says it received remains of 3 hostages from Gaza as fragile ceasefire holds

Israel announced on Sunday that the remains of three hostages had been handed over from Gaza for forensic examination, as a month-old ceasefire with Hamas held.

Hamas said the remains were found in a tunnel in southern Gaza; since the ceasefire began on October 10, 17 hostages’ remains have been released, with 11 still in Gaza.

U.S. President Donald Trump indicated that one of the returned remains belonged to Omer Neutra, an American-Israeli who was killed in Hamas’ October 7, 2023, attack on southern Israel.

Israel has been exchanging Palestinian remains for Israeli hostages, though identification remains difficult due to widespread destruction in Gaza, NPR has reported.

The ceasefire, brokered by the U.S., includes plans for an international stabilization force, but questions remain over Hamas’ disarmament, Gaza governance, and the scaling of humanitarian aid.
