Former Israeli military chief lawyer Maj. Gen. Yifat Tomer-Yerushalmi has been arrested amid a deepening political crisis over the leak of a video allegedly showing Israeli soldiers abusing a Palestinian detainee.
Tomer-Yerushalmi, who resigned as Military Advocate General last week, admitted authorizing the video’s release to counter what she called “false propaganda” against the army’s law enforcement.
The footage, broadcast in 2024, shows reservists allegedly beating and sexually assaulting a detainee at the Sde Teiman military base, leading to charges against five soldiers.
Her arrest, alongside former chief prosecutor Col. Matan Solomosh, has further inflamed tensions between Israel’s political right and left — the former calling the leak treasonous, the latter viewing it as an act of accountability, the BBC has reported.
The scandal has drawn fierce condemnation from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz, who accused Tomer-Yerushalmi of betraying the military.
