The lawyer for a Michigan man arrested in connection with a reportedly foiled Halloween terror plot says there is “no evidence” supporting claims of a planned attack.
Federal sources said five people from Dearborn and Inkster were taken into custody Friday over a plot allegedly tied to Islamic State extremism, with some suspects having firearms and training.
Lawyer Amir Makled described his client as a 20-year-old U.S.-born recreational firearms enthusiast, not part of a terrorist cell, and said he is cooperating fully.
FBI Director Kash Patel had posted that the agency thwarted a violent, internationally linked plot, but Makled called the announcement premature and said it unfairly stigmatizes Arab and Muslim communities in Michigan, NBC News has reported.
It remains unclear what targets, if any, were identified, and the five suspects’ names and court documents have not been publicly released; charges for Makled’s client may be filed or he may be released imminently.
