Democrat Abigail Spanberger wins Virginia governor’s race

Democrat Abigail Spanberger has won Virginia’s gubernatorial race, defeating Republican Winsome Earle-Sears to become the first woman to lead the state, NBC News projects.

The former congresswoman and CIA officer ran a campaign focused on affordability, public safety, and abortion rights, portraying herself as a pragmatic moderate.

Spanberger’s decisive 57%–42% victory in the blue-leaning state gives Democrats key momentum following their 2024 losses.

Her opponent, Earle-Sears, tied herself closely to President Trump and struggled to define her message despite emphasizing continuity with Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s administration, NBC News has reported.

Spanberger’s win was fueled by voter dissatisfaction with Trump and the federal government shutdown, as well as her strong support among those prioritizing the economy.
