Democratic Rep. Mikie Sherrill, a former Navy pilot and federal prosecutor first elected to Congress in 2018, has won New Jersey’s gubernatorial race, defeating Republican Jack Ciattarelli, according to the Associated Press.
Her victory marks the first time since the 1960s that Democrats have held the governor’s office in New Jersey for three consecutive terms.
The closely contested race drew national attention as one of the first statewide elections since President Trump began his second term, with Trump endorsing Ciattarelli and former President Obama campaigning for Sherrill.
Both candidates focused on affordability and rising living costs, but the campaign turned bitter in its final weeks with personal attacks and controversies, NPR has reported.
Sherrill’s win adds to Democrats’ strong night nationally, following Abigail Spanberger’s victory in Virginia.
