President Sheinbaum presses charges after groping incident in Mexico street

Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum announced Wednesday that she is pressing charges against a man who groped her on a Mexico City street the day before.

The incident, captured on video, went viral, prompting Sheinbaum to call for legislation making such crimes punishable in all 32 Mexican states.

She emphasized that the assault reflects a broader problem faced by women nationwide, saying, “If this can happen to the president, what can we expect for all the young women in our country?”

Sheinbaum also condemned the resharing of the video, calling it unethical and potentially a legal violation that constitutes re-victimization, Axios has reported.

In response, she plans to launch a campaign to educate men on respecting women, framing the effort as a defense of women’s dignity and rights across Mexico.
