The Department of Justice has opened an investigation into violence and unrest outside a Turning Point USA event at UC Berkeley on Monday.
Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon said the probe will examine potential violations of federal civil rights and constitutional protections after attendees were reportedly harassed and assaulted by protesters.
The DOJ has ordered the university to preserve all records related to security preparations and the incident, which involved at least eight arrests.
UC Berkeley condemned the violence, pledged full cooperation with federal investigators, and said the event itself, featuring actor Rob Schneider and author Frank Turek, proceeded without interruption, Fox News has reported.
The investigation will also determine whether the Nov. 10 events should be included in broader ongoing DOJ probes into alleged Title VI and Title VII violations across the University of California system.
