A car explosion near Delhi’s Red Fort killed at least eight people and injured 20, with the Indian government labeling it a “terror incident.”
The blast occurred at a red light around 18:52 local time in a Hyundai i20 carrying three people, damaging nearby vehicles and prompting a high alert in Delhi and neighboring states.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s cabinet condemned the attack as a cowardly act by anti-national forces and called for a swift, professional investigation to bring the perpetrators to justice.
Home Minister Amit Shah said all possibilities are being explored, while opposition leader Rahul Gandhi described the attack as “extremely heartbreaking,” the BBC has reported.
The Red Fort, a historic 17th-century landmark and site of annual Independence Day speeches, remains a major tourist attraction.
