Rep. Eric Swalwell confirmed he is now faceing a federal criminal investigation for alleged mortgage fraud.
The probe stems from a letter from the Federal Housing Finance Agency to the attorney general claiming Swalwell may have committed mortgage and tax fraud, similar to accusations recently leveled against other Democratic officials.
Swalwell denounced the investigation as politically motivated, noting his long history as a prominent Trump critic and his ongoing lawsuit against the former president.
The inquiry is part of a broader pattern in which Trump has pushed for charges against perceived enemies, including Letitia James, Lisa Cook, and Adam Schiff, while separate cases have led to indictments of James Comey and John Bolton, The Guardian has reported.
According to NBC News, the referral alleges Swalwell improperly claimed his primary residence in Washington, D.C., to obtain several million dollars in loans and refinancing.
