Stephen Bryant, 44, is scheduled to be executed Friday by firing squad in South Carolina for killing three people in five days in 2004, making him the third person executed by this method in the state this year.
Three prison employees with live ammunition have volunteered to carry out the execution, which is set for 6 p.m. at Broad River Correctional Institution.
Bryant admitted to the killings, including shooting Willard “TJ” Tietjen multiple times and informing Tietjen’s family, as well as killing two other men after giving them rides.
His lawyers said he had a history of trauma and substance abuse prior to the murders, linked to past sexual abuse by relatives, the AP has reported.
Bryant will be the 43rd person executed in the U.S. so far this year and the 50th in South Carolina since the death penalty resumed 40 years ago.
