Student-athletes among 14 charged in alleged sports betting ring tied to crime family

Fourteen people have been charged in an alleged organized crime sports betting ring run in North Jersey and led by Joseph “Little Joe” Perna, a purported Lucchese crime family soldier.

Prosecutors say the operation processed about $2 million in illegal gambling transactions between 2022 and 2024 and included student-athletes among those placing bets.

Perna’s sons, stepbrother, and several cousins were allegedly involved in managing and facilitating the ring’s daily sportsbook operations across Essex and Bergen counties.

The defendants face charges ranging from racketeering and conspiracy to gambling offenses and money laundering, with Perna’s wife and ex-wife also facing separate charges, ABC 6 Action News has reported.

Authorities say the takedown highlights their effort to dismantle criminal networks benefiting from corruption and illegal gambling.
