Israeli authorities are investigating the killing of two Palestinian men in Jenin after video showed them appearing to surrender before being shot by Israeli forces.
The Palestinian Authority condemned the incident as a “war crime,” while Palestinian Islamic Jihad said the men were fighters who had run out of ammunition before being “executed.”
Israeli officials said the men were wanted for alleged terror activities and that Border Police officers believed they were still a threat during a prolonged surrender procedure.
The officers involved were questioned and released on bail, with their lawyer saying they acted out of fear for their lives, CNN has reported.
The incident drew sharp criticism from the UN Human Rights Office, which called it a “summary execution,” while Israel’s National Security Minister praised the troops involved.
