Trump says he will pardon former Honduran president serving sentence in drug-trafficking case

President Donald Trump announced he intends to grant a “full and complete pardon” to former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández, who is serving a 45-year U.S. federal sentence for drug-trafficking crimes.

Hernández was convicted of conspiring with cartels to move hundreds of tons of cocaine to the United States in exchange for millions in bribes that supported his political rise.

Trump claimed Hernández was treated unfairly and linked the planned pardon to his endorsement of Honduran presidential candidate Nasry “Tito” Asfura ahead of Sunday’s election.

U.S. prosecutors had argued that Hernández used his executive power to protect loyal traffickers while targeting rivals, mirroring allegations the U.S. has made against Venezuela’s Nicolás Maduro, CNN has reported.

Hernández’s attorney praised Trump’s announcement, calling the prosecution political and expressing hope for Hernández’s return to Honduras.
