Hundreds of Chicago residents sign petition to pause robot delivery pilot program

Chicago residents are calling for a pause to the city’s sidewalk delivery robot pilot program, citing safety and accessibility concerns.

The Personal Delivery Device (PDD) program, run by companies like Coco and Serve, deploys robots to deliver food from restaurants, but over 800 residents have signed a petition highlighting issues like sidewalk obstruction, collisions, and difficulties for people using wheelchairs or mobility aids.

One resident, Anthony Jonas, reported a collision that required medical attention, while petition organizer Josh Robertson said the robots create hazards in pedestrian spaces.

Each robot is equipped with multiple cameras for navigation and surveillance, raising privacy concerns, though the companies say they track incidents and follow city regulations, CBS News has reported.

The pilot program, initially launched in 2022, is set to run through at least May 2026, with a City Council review required for continuation beyond May 2027.
