Former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte will remain in detention at the International Criminal Court after appeals judges rejected his request for release on health grounds.
He faces charges of crimes against humanity for alleged killings linked to his war on drugs, spanning his time as mayor of Davao and as president.
Judges ruled that his lawyers failed to show that earlier decisions keeping him in custody were unreasonable, noting the risk he could flee or intimidate witnesses.
Duterte’s legal team cited his declining health and cognitive abilities, requesting transfer to another country, but the court found the risk of release could not be mitigated, NBC News has reported.
The ICC has continued its investigation despite the Philippines’ withdrawal from the court, rejecting challenges to its jurisdiction and Duterte’s arguments that local authorities were already addressing the allegations.
