Man charged in National Guard shooting pleads not guilty during court appearance

Rahmanullah Lakanwal, the 29-year-old Afghan national accused of shooting two National Guard troops near the White House, pleaded not guilty Tuesday to murder and assault charges during a remote hearing from a hospital bed.

The attack killed Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, 20, and wounded Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe, 24, after Lakanwal allegedly fired at the troops while shouting “Allahu Akbar.”

D.C. Superior Court Judge Renee Raymond ordered Lakanwal held without bond, citing the terror caused by the attack, and set his next court date for January 14.

Prosecutors described the shooting as a premeditated ambush, while Lakanwal’s defense attorney noted he has no prior criminal record, the AP has reported.

The investigation continues, and U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro said additional federal charges are possible, with Attorney General Pam Bondi ultimately deciding whether to seek the death penalty.
