West African troops were deployed to Benin on Sunday following an attempted coup by a group of soldiers who attacked state institutions and briefly seized state TV.
President Patrice Talon said the situation was “totally under control” after loyalist forces regained control, while ECOWAS sent forces from Ghana, Ivory Coast, Nigeria, and Sierra Leone to support the government.
The mutinying soldiers, calling themselves the Military Committee for Refoundation, announced the removal of Talon and all state institutions, appointing Lt. Col. Pascal Tigri as their leader.
Nigerian fighter jets also helped dislodge the coup plotters from key locations at the request of Benin’s government, The Guardian has reported.
The attempt comes ahead of April’s presidential election and amid growing regional instability, with jihadist attacks and recent coups in neighboring West African countries.
