During Day 4 of pretrial hearings, body camera footage and testimony revealed that Altoona police searched accused CEO killer Luigi Mangione’s backpack without a warrant after arresting him at a McDonald’s.
Officers debated whether a warrant was needed, with one noting the search might require one due to the case’s severity, while a supervisor justified it as a “search incident to arrest.”
The search uncovered a loaded handgun, silencer, magazine, a Faraday-bagged phone, a journal, and handwritten notes, some of which were later transferred to New York authorities for the CEO murder investigation.
Defense attorneys argue the warrantless search violated Mangione’s constitutional rights and are seeking to exclude the evidence, questioning whether the “bomb search” justification was pretextual, ABC News has reported.
Prosecutors outlined the chain of custody and emphasized that contraband like the firearm and suppressor required seizure, while non-contraband items were preserved for potential relevance to the New York case; the hearing is set to continue with additional testimony.
