A 33-year-old man died after driving into floodwaters near Seattle, becoming the first reported fatality from a week of heavy rain and flooding in the region.
Rescue crews found his car submerged in about six feet of water in Snohomish County, but lifesaving efforts failed.
Authorities warned that many residents underestimated the speed and danger of rising waters, with numerous rescues involving people stranded atop vehicles or in flooded homes.
