Nebraska plans to be the first state to implement Trump’s new Medicaid work requirements

Nebraska will become the first state to impose work requirements on some Medicaid recipients under a law signed by President Trump last year, starting May 1.

About 30,000 people in the Medicaid expansion group, with slightly higher incomes, will need to work or perform community service 80 hours per month, or be enrolled in school at least half-time, to maintain coverage.

Certain groups—such as disabled veterans, pregnant women, parents of young children, recently incarcerated individuals, the homeless, and those in addiction treatment—will be exempt.

Beneficiaries must submit proof every six months, doubling the current reporting frequency and requiring updates to state systems, the AP has reported.

The move could influence other states as they consider implementing similar work mandates under the federal law.
