US Justice Department sues 3 states, District of Columbia for voter data

The U.S. Justice Department filed lawsuits Thursday against Wisconsin, Illinois, Georgia, and the District of Columbia for failing to provide voter information requested by the Trump administration.

This is part of a broader effort, with 22 lawsuits filed so far, to collect detailed voter registration data nationwide, including names, dates of birth, addresses, and partial Social Security numbers.

States like Georgia and Wisconsin have resisted, citing state privacy laws and concerns about legality, with bipartisan commissions in Wisconsin rejecting the requests.

The Justice Department argues the states are violating federal law and says the data is needed to protect elections from “vote dilution,” ABC News has reported.

Critics have raised concerns over privacy and how the sensitive information will be used, while officials insist the effort is about election integrity and transparency.
