Brian Cole, the Virginia man arrested for placing pipe bombs outside the Republican and Democratic National Committees the night before January 6, 2021, told investigators he was not targeting Congress or the certification of Joe Biden’s election win, according to a new court filing.
In a lengthy interview after his December 4 arrest, Cole admitted planting the devices, which he intended to detonate with 60-minute timers, but said he chose the DNC and RNC because he “did not like either party” and saw them as appropriate targets.
He claimed he did not consider how people would react, did not test the bombs, and was relieved they failed to detonate.
Cole reportedly disposed of his bomb-making materials at a nearby dump and spent the years since wiping data from his phone without telling anyone about the devices, ABC News has reported.
Prosecutors emphasized the extreme danger of his actions, noting that it was “luck, not lack of effort” that no one was harmed, and he is set for a detention hearing on Tuesday.
