Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the US has agreed to provide Ukraine with strong 15-year security guarantees, though the fate of the eastern Donbas region remains unresolved after his meeting with Donald Trump.
The guarantees, part of a 20-point peace plan, would be voted on by both the US Congress and Ukraine’s parliament and are seen as crucial to deter further Russian aggression.
Zelenskyy rejected giving land to Russia, instead proposing a demilitarized economic zone along the current frontline, potentially subject to a Ukrainian referendum if a 60-day ceasefire occurs.
Trump claimed a deal to end the war is “closer than ever,” but Moscow insisted Ukraine must withdraw from certain areas, warning of further territorial loss, The Guardian has reported.
Zelenskyy plans further discussions with European leaders and a follow-up meeting with Trump in January.
