A Georgia judge has temporarily halted the execution of Stacey Humphreys, which was already delayed, citing questions about potential conflicts of interest on the state’s parole board.
Humphreys, 52, was convicted of murdering Cyndi Williams and Lori Brown in a 2003 shooting at their Cobb County real estate office and was scheduled for execution on December 17.
His lawyers argued that two parole board members—Kimberly McCoy, a former victim advocate on the case, and Wayne Bennett, a sheriff involved in jury security—should recuse themselves from his clemency hearing.
Fulton County Superior Court Judge Robert McBurney ordered both sides to file additional briefs by January 19 to address the issue, CNN has reported.
The judge emphasized that Humphreys is entitled to a clemency review free of conflicts of interest before any execution proceeds.
