President Donald Trump has authorized a National Guard deployment in New Orleans starting Tuesday to bolster security for New Year’s celebrations, a year after a Bourbon Street attack killed 14 people.
The 350 Guardsmen will patrol the French Quarter, focusing on visibility and public safety, and will not participate in immigration enforcement.
Their presence complements more than 800 local, state, and federal law enforcement officers who will manage traffic, conduct bag searches, and close Bourbon Street to vehicles.
The deployment follows similar missions in other cities and builds on previous National Guard support during major events like Mardi Gras and the Super Bowl, ABC News has reported.
Officials emphasized the measure aims to enhance safety and public trust amid heightened security concerns, though some local Democrats have questioned the necessity given declining crime rates.
