An off-duty ICE officer shot and killed an armed man outside his Los Angeles apartment complex on New Year’s Eve, according to the Department of Homeland Security.
The officer reportedly heard what he suspected were gunshots, went outside with his ICE-authorized firearm, and encountered a man armed with a long rifle who allegedly pointed it at him.
After identifying himself as law enforcement and giving orders to disarm, the officer fired defensively when the man did not comply and had already fired at least three rounds.
The officer retrieved body armor and reported the incident to LAPD, who found the suspect dead at the scene; the ICE officer was uninjured, ABC News has reported.
The LAPD and ICE’s Office of Professional Responsibility are investigating, and the identities of both the officer and the deceased have not been released.
