President Trump said early Saturday that Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife were captured and flown out of the country during a large-scale U.S. strike, drawing swift international condemnation.

Trump said the U.S. would temporarily run Venezuela during a transition period and move to restore oil production.

U.S. officials said the operation was carried out by the Army’s Delta Force, and Maduro is expected to face federal drug trafficking and terrorism-related charges in the United States, which he denies.

The action follows months of U.S. military buildup in the region, including the deployment of the USS Gerald R. Ford and other warships to the Caribbean, CBS News has reported.

In recent weeks, the U.S. has also seized Venezuelan oil tankers and conducted dozens of strikes on vessels it claims were involved in drug smuggling.
